Accessible Coconuts

Accessible Coconutsis a free, open-source, community-driven Linux distribution specifically designed for people with visual impairments.

AC is a GNU/Linux operating system derived from Ubuntu-MATE, with the goal of creating a completely "eyes-free" desktop environment for visually impaired users.

key features include:

  • The screen reader is Orca, using the eSpeak speech engine, with options for alternatives like IBM ViaVoice and Cepstral. All accessibility tools are found in the Universal Access section.
  • Six-key input lets users type text in any field using only six keys in a Perkins Brailler (Braille) mode, and there's a typing tutor for learning to type in multiple languages.
  • Book reading features include print reading via OCR scanner (supporting major languages), a Daisy-player for DAISY format audiobooks, and an Ebook speaker for EPUB, PDF, and text files.
