antix-linux

Antix Linux is a lightweight, fast Debian-based distribution designed to run well on older hardware and low-resource systems. Here are the key things to know about it:

Core Philosophy: Antix is built around the principle of being "fast, lean and mean" - it's specifically designed to breathe new life into older computers while still being useful on modern hardware. It's systemd-free, using sysVinit and runit instead.

Desktop Environment: It primarily uses IceWM, Fluxbox, or ROX-Filer as window managers rather than full desktop environments like GNOME or KDE. This keeps the resource footprint very low. There's also a version called "antiX-core" which is even more minimal.

Technical Details

  • Based on Debian stable (though it uses a custom kernel)
  • Uses the APT package manager, so you have access to Debian's vast software repositories
  • Comes with custom tools like the antiX Control Center for system configuration
  • Includes live USB persistence features
  • Has custom scripts for things like system rescue and installation
  • System Requirements:It's remarkably light - it can run on systems with as little as 256MB of RAM for the full version, and even less for the core version. This makes it excellent for reviving old laptops or creating efficient servers.

    We take security seriously

Once you have downloaded an image, be sure to verify it for both security and integrity.

By calculating the image’s checksum on your own computer and comparing it to the original checksum, you can verify the image has not been tampered with or corrupted. Images are also gpg signed with Fedora keys to demonstrate their integrity.

    • Click the verify button to download the checksum file for your downloaded image.

    • Import Linuxrpms's GPG key(s)

                      curl -O https://linuxrpms.com/linuxrpms-gpg.pub

You can verify the details of the GPG key(s) here.

    • Verify the checksum file is valid

                      gpgv --keyring ./linuxrpms-gpg.pub antixlinux-*-CHECKSUM

    • Verify the checksum matches

                      sha256sum -c antixlinux-*-CHECKSUM

If the output states that the file is valid, then it's ready to use!
